Had I Never Been Rejected

  • I would be an actor, never having realized that what I need to do is write.
  • I would be married to a day trader—a boy who peaked at 16. I would not have met my husband.
  • I would have attended Carnegie Mellon and never have met my best friends.
  • I would not know the meaning of hard work, or what it is work on a single project for 10 years of your life. Or how rewarding that can be.
  • I wouldn’t know the elation of publication after so very many refusals.
  • I would wonder if I really earned everything given to me.
  • I wouldn’t know bravery.  Bravery does not exist without fear of consequence.

I wouldn’t love so well, laugh so well, work so hard or have faith in my ability to persevere. I would be less, because without rejection I would not know people who have become as much a part of me as my skin. I would not have strength.

Had I never been rejected, you would not know me at all. I would not be here. I’d have nothing to say.
