The Mountain Goats - No Children

One of my tasks today is to plot how to make Mr. Of The House cry. I’ll explain: One of the few joys of being a writer is being able to write a good love letter. Every year for Valentine’s Day I do my best to break through that manly wall of “my eyes never leak.” I do a good job. I’ve got a lot to say this year and picking the right words is going to be a task of gargantuan proportions. Basically, language doesn’t really capture what this man did for me and my family this year.

Being married is difficult. Very, very, difficult. I don’t mean that it’s miserable, but it’s a job, make no mistake. Among all the love, friendship and good feelings, there are times when you have to make huge adjustments for each other. Allowances. Leeway. Settling. The husband has had a bad work year with me. Y’know, “mother-in-law stuff, family wrangling, wife crying in the social worker’s office, do we have to move, insane writer on a deadline wrangling, what if we run out of money, what if the wife refuses to ever leave bed, and yet I still have to go to work,” type stuff.

There are some days where no matter how much you love your spouse (and how could you not love me?) you want to kill them. There’s no way he didn’t want to strangle me at some point. And yet, you’re in this marriage thing until its miserable end. Somehow that’s comforting.

There are days when you mean every single word of this song.

This isn’t one of those days.

No, Mr. of the House and I do not have children.
