Pretty In Pink: “Duckie”

Duckie loved Andie in a way that Blane never could have, there is no way he deserved her.

Duckie and Andie should have ended up together.

John Hughes thought so too, but the studio thought it sent the wrong message.

So John Hughes made “Some Kind of Wonderful” to get the ending he wanted.

Pretty in Pink had two kind of romances to choose from. Unfortunately, no matter which was chosen, both were, well, wrong.

Should Andie have picked Duckie, it would have implied that one should prefer the love of a devoted friend and that the poor should never aspire to be with anything other than the poor, and that economics can thwart love. Basically, falling in love with someone who is devoted to you would have been overshadowed by the curse of classism. No, you *can’t* have Prince Charming, because you’re poor. Stay with the poor, you’ll be happy with the poor.

With Andie picking Blane, well, she chooses Prince Charming over the love of a devoted friend, someone who is who he is with a vengeance, as opposed to someone who at times is easily swayed by friends. It looks as though she chose money over love. However, it does suggest that love can and should conquer class.

The movie is problematic in all ways, except that it makes a deep and abiding love for Otis Redding appear as truly amazing as it is.

Some Kind of Wonderful is valid because it promotes the attractiveness of redheaded men. It is also ridiculous because the protagonist spends his entire future on a pair of diamond earrings for a teenage love. If someone hands you their college fund in earring form, they are not acceptable as your boyfriend. It is a thoroughly acceptable film for containing a spectacular Elvis cover.
