Five were constructed but it failed to find a market due to the Depression” (via) Well, yes and no.  For a brief time makers of autogiros had hopes that they would function essentially as a car for American families.  That idea however proved to be terrifically impractical, not just due to the Depression, but in light to the fact that at the time they were both experimental and dangerous.  Models varied widely, many prone to rotor loss. Gyros were also known for hard landings. How much of that was due to pilot skill versus mechanics is difficult to say. It was by no means a product that would have fared well in the mass market. Also of note: For a time Amelia Earhart ceased flying planes to focus solely on autogiros, in which she set multiple records. She was also publicly reprimanded for crashing one.
