GPOY being massively tired. It’s been a long week. Also, I ran, or jogged, or hobbled, or staggered—whatever you call it—for 5k.

Clearly that was a poor decision.

My photo editor offered me the option of “face fix” for this. I declined. If you can’t fix it with a black bar, what’s the point? Also, my photo editor might be trying to tell me something.

Since I’m pretty sure everyone is chomping at the bit to hear how my tarot card mauling went. (Side question: Is it possible to properly convey sarcasm in a post? If not, I’m seriously screwed as a tumblr and as a writer…)

This was just a test run of four, the ones that were included in the prototype project that was shipped this morning. They’ve been killed with an emery board on both sides and soaked in coffee.

The second shot is for reference, to show how white, shiny and new these cards were.

Of note:

New, cheap cards are coated in plastic. This makes things difficult.
I really need a respirator.
These cards are held together by, I kid you not, black glue that bleeds and cries like a river of disease once soaked in coffee.
I don’t smell very good.
Or look very good.
Destroying things is exhausting.

On the plus side, I did not have to cannibalize my own deck, a deck that I’ve had for 15 years. I’m glad for that. I’ve given substantial pieces of my life to this project. That one little thing would have been a step too far.

I guess it’s a photo set day for me. Sorry.

Adventures in making a fake old book. And so, I’ve sketched and printed on tea stained paper. Found some paper that looks and feels like old leather. Bound it. Tea stained the edges.

In theory the sketches will be an interactive element, as will some other altered things. Yes, I know that dude looks a bit like Stalin and Tsar Nicholas II. That’s intentional.

I dunno, man. I dunno. I keep telling myself this is cool, but I’ve been working in a vacuum.

I’m sketching today. The project that I’m learning bookbinding for also requires me to do some calligraphy and sketching. I haven’t sketched in years, so I’m cheating a little. These are scanned and run through a photo editor. Let’s face it, filters make me look like a far better artist than I am, and there is *no way* I could even consider making 12 hand copies of each sketch. Cheating is saving my life. That said, I’m pretty pleased with how these came out, especially considering I haven’t drawn in [insert ridiculous number here] years.

A trial run at stab binding. For reasons related to things I need to experiment with making an aged handbound book. One that might be, oh, say 108k to 110k words, that looks old yet is not a pain in the butt to read or heft around. But is easy enough to make that I could hand produce oh, I dunno, 12 copies.

You know. Reasons.

I did a trial run with a kraft paper cover, but the final product will use paper that is a dead ringer for aged leather. But, you know, best to do a dry run with the cheap stuff to find out if I’m off my rocker or not.

It might be annoying for someone (important? yeah, imporant) to read through oh, say 367 pages of tea stained paper, so I’m expermenting with doing just the edges. Thus, you get the thrill of looking at something old without the hassel of reading a ton of stiff pages. I’ve also taken a nail file to the edges to get some interesting soft textures.

Not bad for a first go, considering I have no idea what I’m doing.

Be a writer. You might just wind up doing obscure things that nobody cares about.
